VE Day 70th Anniversary: Celebration and Living History Day

The 70th anniversary of VE Day was commemorated at Sheffield Cathedral with a 1940s themed living history event for all the family.

There was displays, vehicles, home front and military re-enactors and children’s activities outside and inside the cathedral to commemorate and remember Sheffield’s role in World War 2 and celebrate the 70th anniversary of Victory in Europe 1945.

1940s music was played throughout the day by a Swing Band, pianist and the Bobby Pins Trio (think Andrews Sisters!). ‘Winston Churchill’ gave his famous speeches as we remembered his visit to Sheffield following the Blitz in 1940.

The Moor turned back the clock 70 years to mark the anniversary of the Sheffield Blitz. With people in period costume, air raid sirens and a tea dance. There was also displays of World War II memorabilia such as gas masks and ID cards.
