Aswan - Egypt
Egypt's southernmost city and ancient frontier town has the loveliest setting on the Nile. At Aswan the deserts close in on the river, confining its sparkling blue between smooth amber sand and rugged extrusions of granite bedrock.
Philae and the Temple of Isis - Aswan, Egypt
The island of Philae and its Temple of Isis have bewitched visitors since Ptolemaic times. However, once it became apparent that the new High Dam would submerge Philae, UNESCO and the Egyptian authorities organised a massive operation to relocate its temples on nearby Aglika Island.

The High Dam and Soviet-Egyptian Memorial - Aswan, Egypt
The dam was constructed between 1960 and 1971 with help from the Soviet Union when the World Bank reneged on a promised loan under pressure from the US. The most visible consequence of the High Dam is Lake Nasser, which backs up over 500km, well into Sudan. Since a dam burst would wash most of Egypt's population into the Mediterranean, its security is paramount. The surrounding hills bristle with radar installations and anti-aircraft missiles and photography is restricted in the area.
