The World Snooker Championship is the leading professional snooker tournament in terms of both prize money and ranking points. The first championship was held in 1927; and since 1977, it has been played at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield.

It has been confirmed that the World Championships will stay at the Crucible until 2015.

This year's Sharrow Lantern Carnival gathered at Mount Pleasant Park and headed off via London Road to the General Cemetery Park for live music, fire spinners and the lantern release. The theme of this year's Carnival was Elements. The parade was headed by the Sheffield Samba Band and backed up by African drummers.

Portland Works - Randall Street

Portland Works, built in 1877, is one of the earliest surviving examples of an integrated metal trades complex. It is a Grade II listed building, which in 1913 became the first place in the world to manufacture stainless steel cutlery. Remarkably, it still does what it was built for - offering low-cost workshop space to small manufacturing businesses and independent artists and craftspeople. You'll find here metalworkers, engineers and craftsmen, furniture makers, artists and musicians. They are a cross section of talent following in the footsteps of the 'Little Mesters' who made Sheffield famous.

This workshop originally was the packing warehouse. Squarepegs now work from here, manufacturing an unusual patented coat hook system with schools in mind.

Anchor Auto Finishers - this workshop once housed the steam engine which would have powered the works. The current occupants are renowned for their classic and vintage vehicle and bike restoration and undertake all types of metal work like welding and polishing.

Salford Quays - Manchester

Salford Quays is an area of Salford in Greater Manchester, near the end of the Manchester Ship Canal. Previously the site of Manchester Docks, it became one of the first and largest urban regeneration projects in the UK following the closure of the dockyards in 1982.

The Lowry stands at the end of Pier 8, largely surrounded by the waters of the Manchester Ship Canal. Designed by James Stirling and Michael Wilford, it opened on 28 April 2000 and houses the 1730 seat Lyric theatre, the 466 seat Quays theatre, a range of studio spaces and 17,330 square feet of gallery space. In addition there are cafes, bars and a restaurant on the south-western end of the building, with views over the water to Libeskind's Imperial War Museum North. As the name suggests, the centre is associated with L. S. Lowry, and houses a unique collection of his work. Some of the pieces are on permanent display, whilst others are on loan and may appear in changing exhibitions where appropriate.
